This was the first felted creature I ever made. I learned about needle felting when I was visiting my friend and sculptor Amy Morel in Vermont in June of 2012. She told me how much she liked the sound of the needle going into the wool and gave me some needles.
Some time after that I bought a red fox needle felting kit on Etsy (shown below). It was kind of funny– basically the kit gives you some different colors of wool and a few pointers about how you might turn it into a fox. It’s about the same thing as giving someone some colored clay with a few instructions and calling it a fox sculpture kit.
I started out intending to make a fox, abandoned all hope, and ended up with this guy.
My favorite part is putting the clothes on.
